That's why I set minimums. For example, I won't design certain bands below around 1.8 millimeters in height, because thinner rings bend more easily and show wear faster over decades. It's not something most people think about when they're scrolling for inspiration, but it's what determines whether your ring still feels like a friend 20 years from now instead of a fragile relic.
Low-Profile vs. High-Profile: What That Really Means
"Low-profile engagement rings" have become a search term, but in practice, profile is 
about how far the stone and setting sit off your finger and how that interacts with your life. If you tell me you're constantly pulling gloves on and off, or you spend alot of time lifting, cooking, or working with tools, a lower-profile setting usually makes more sense. It keeps the ring closer to your hand, reduces snagging, and protects the stone from unnecessary impact.
Higher-profile settings can be gorgeous and absolutely viable for some clients. The key is being honest about how you'll wear the ring and designing accordingly. In a custom process, we can play with height, proportion, and stone shapes to find that sweet spot where the ring looks like your dream and behaves like a daily companion.
Stones, Metals, and Real-World Durability
Custom engagement rings aren't just about the center stone; they're about what that stone can withstand. For rings meant foreveryday wear, I often recommend diamonds or sapphires because of their hardness and durability, whether we're talking classic white diamonds, salt-and-pepper stones, or Montana sapphires with more character.

out a questionnaire before we meet: occasion, metals you're drawn to, stones you're curious about, lifestyle, budget, and any heirloom materials you might want to use. Our first consult is a fact-finding mission on both sides of the desk. I'm learning how you want this ring to live with you; you're learning what's possible.
I joke that people often leave that first consultation a little overwhelmed, but hopefully in an excited way. Then we let it marinate. You send more inspiration, I sketch, we refine. We look at stones together, in person or via meticulous photos and videos, and we keep adjusting until the design feels solid and you feel genuinely good about every decision
Designing a Ring You Can Grow Into
"Custom" doesn't end when the ring is finished. When we design an engagement ring, I'm already thinking ahead to wedding bands and future stacks: how the ring will pair, what kinds of bands can nest around it, whether it can accommodate anniversary additions without feeling crowded or uncomfortable.
